This article explains how each individual Triplebyte filter works. If you haven't yet read our overview on how searching works in general, please go to this article.
Triplebyte offers a wide range of filters:
Location & Visa
You can filter by cities, U.S. states, certain regions, or countries. For cities, matches include anywhere within 25 miles of a selected city. For regions, matches include the full region (example: Bay Area).
Current Location: Defaults to dealbreaker
Matches a candidate’s current location.
Visa Status: Defaults to dealbreaker
Matches candidates with a specified visa status.
Preferred Work Locations: Defaults to dealbreaker
Matches a candidate’s desired work locations. We currently support preferences only for certain metro areas and remote.
Time Zone: Defaults to stack rank
Matches candidates within a specified range of time zones, as inferred from their current location. It does not account for Daylight Savings Time, since it is observed at different times at different locations.
- Note: Time Zone does not account for nationality. So if for example you want to find only U.S. candidates within an 1 hour of the East Coast, you'd want to include both a 1 hour from NYC Time Zone filter and a "Visa status" filter. With just the time zone filter, you'll see all candidates within 1 hour of the East Coast, which could include Canada- and South America-based candidates.
Triplebyte Assessment Scores
All quiz filters match candidates who have earned at least a Level 3 on that Triplebyte quiz, which indicates core professional competence in that area.
Most candidates do not take every quiz, even if they have experience in a subject area. All quiz filters default to Stack Rank, and we strongly recommend keeping this setting to avoid filtering out candidates who have not tried this quiz.

Triplebyte Platform Data
This set of filters uses data from the Triplebyte platform, not information supplied by the candidate.
Responsiveness: Defaults to stack rank
Matches candidates who are likely to be responsive, based on an ML model trained on past Triplebyte candidate behavior. For example, a candidate who submits an application, who has logged on recently, or who has been responsive to other outreach is more likely to respond to a message.
Searches that use this filter in Stack Rank see roughly double the positive response rate of searches that don’t (we do not recommend using this as a Dealbreaker).
Hidden Gem: Defaults to stack rank
Each week, we feature a group of a few hundred candidates who are all three of (a) highly skilled, (b) highly responsive, and (c) rarely seen in searches. The Hidden Gem filter is a great way to find candidates not being surfaced by other companies, especially those with unusual traits (nontraditional backgrounds, unusual locations, etc).
New Candidates: Defaults to stack rank
Matches candidates who have joined Triplebyte within the past two weeks, or who have recently enabled their profile visibility after a period of inactivity.
Actively Looking: Defaults to stack rank
Matches candidates who have flagged themselves as “actively looking.” This status persists for one month and must be re-enabled by the candidate after that period expires.
Experience
Total Years Experience: Defaults to stack rank
Matches candidates’ total self-reported years of experience.
Remote YoE: Defaults to stack rank
Matches a candidate’s self-reported years of remote work experience.
Experience w/Subfield: Defaults to stack rank
Matches candidates’ self-reported experience with specific engineering subfields (like machine learning or full-stack development).
Experience w/Technology: Defaults to stack rank
Matches candidates’ self-reported experience with specific technologies.
- For “OR” functionality, where a candidate is shown if they match any one specified technology, add this filter one time and list multiple technologies within it.
- For “AND” functionality, where a candidate must match all of several different technologies, add this filter multiple times, listing each technology separately under each instance.
Candidate Preferences
Salary Expectations: Defaults to stack rank
Matches candidates who have indicated that they’re open to a salary below the value you enter, or have not indicated any salary range.
- Note: The dealbreaker version of this filter does not hide candidates who have not entered any salary range, because many candidates choose not to share this particular preference.
Engineering Subfield: Defaults to dealbreaker
Matches candidates who have indicated that they want to work in specific engineering subfields.
Use “Experience w/Subfield” in the "Experience" section to filter by their actual experience with specific subfields.
Company Size: Defaults to stack rank
Matches a candidate’s desired company size. It does not include whether they have experience at that size of company.
- Note: The dealbreaker version of this filter does not hide candidates who have not entered any company size preferences, because many candidates choose not to enter them.
Industry: Defaults to stack rank
Matches a candidate’s desired industry. It does not include whether they have experience in that industry.
- Note: The dealbreaker version of this filter does not hide candidates who have not entered any industry preferences, because many candidates choose not to enter them.
Open to Management: Defaults to stack rank
Matches candidates who have indicated that they are open to management roles.
Other
Keyword: Defaults to stack rank
Matches candidates whose profiles contain specific keywords. This includes a candidate's name, so you can use keywords to find specific candidates by name. (Exception: Users sourcing in Skills-First Mode cannot search by candidate name, since identifying information is hidden.)
- For “OR” functionality, where a candidate matches if they match any one specified keyword, add this filter one time and list multiple keywords within it.
- For “AND” functionality, where a candidate must match several different keywords, add this filter multiple times, listing keywords separately under each instance.
History with Candidate
Not Recently Viewed: Defaults to dealbreaker
Matches candidates who you have not viewed within the last 6 months. You can also set it to show candidates who have not been viewed by any member of your team or your company during that time. You (or your teammate) must click on the profile for it to be considered "viewed." Scrolling past a candidate in search results is not included.
Not Recently Messaged: Defaults to dealbreaker
Matches candidates who you have not messaged within the last 6 months. You can also set it to show candidates who have not been messaged by any member of your team or your company during that time.
Bookmarked: Defaults to dealbreaker
Matches candidates that you’ve bookmarked for this role.
Internal Notes: Defaults to dealbreaker
Matches candidates with internal notes set by you or others at your company. Optionally, you can enter text snippets to find candidates with internal notes containing that text.
