We score candidates on a 5 point scale. We provide overall scores that are based on all of the skill blocks the candidate completed, as well as a breakdown of scores for each distinct topic. When deciding whether to interview candidates, we generally recommend the following:
- For 1/5 scores, the applicant demonstrates little knowledge of this subject area
- For 2/5 scores, the applicant demonstrates average knowledge of this subject area. This is a common score for early career engineers with good potential who will benefit from senior guidance.
- For a 3/5 score, the applicant demonstrates core professional proficiency of this subject area indicative of an IC engineer who can independently own code in that area
- For 4/5 and 5/5 scores, the applicant demonstrates advanced understanding of this subject area
What is the distribution of Screen test scores?
This will vary based on your own pipeline quality, but on average, 70% of applicants score a 1/5 or 2/5. 15% will score a 3/5, 10% a 4/5 and finally, less than 5% of applicants will score a 5/5.
How well does Screen predict phone screen and interview performance?
We've refined the test until it is highly predictive: applicants scoring a 5/5 on the test pass our technical interview 90% of the time.
How should I interpret test results from juniors?
Most of the skill blocks are adaptive - which means that they will scale up or down to the candidate’s skill based on their performance so far. For entry-level candidates, we recommend using a lower threshold (Level 2+) to pass through to a call, whereas for mid-level candidates, Level 3+ is usually the right threshold. We also recommend including the Timed Coding skill block for entry-level candidates, so they can show off their hands-on skills.
