It makes a great first impression! Companies like candidates who are specifically enthusiastic about their company, just like how you probably respond better to personalized messages than to form emails. Personalized messages create a human connection and are a strong signal to companies that you're serious about engaging with them.
When it comes to what to write, think about your message like a very short cover letter. Its purpose is to convince that company to reach out to you. The most effective messages include:
- Why you're interested in this particular role at this particular company
- Any details about your skills, interests, or preferences that aren't already covered in your profile
Can I edit my messages after I've sent them? Can I send more than one?
Triplebyte messages are like emails; they cannot be edited after sending. We only allow one message per open role, so we recommend that you review your messages closely and proofread before sending.
I really want to work at Company X. Can I send a message about every open role to show my interest?
The short answer is yes, you can, but you probably shouldn't. Here's why:
Even though companies often list more than one open role at a time, we do not recommend copying/pasting the same message to the same company for many roles. Sending generalized, one-size-fits-all messages about roles you aren't particularly qualified for or especially interested in may signal that you don’t know what you want or don’t have strong interest in any one engineering discipline.
Instead, we suggest pinpointing roles at a variety of companies that really fit your skills and preferences, and sending a few specific, personal messages about those particular roles. Occasionally the skills required for multiple roles at the same company will overlap (e.g. you may be qualified for both a product engineer role and a front-end engineer role). You can certainly send multiple personalized messages to a company if you think you're a good match for more than one of their listed roles.
Please note that if you've sent messages about multiple roles to a single company, the company will only see one message at a time—the message corresponding to the role they're currently sourcing for. Therefore, you should be sure to include any details about why you're interested in that company in each of your messages.
